West Vacation (Part 3)

We left Grand Lake on Thursday morning to start our journey to Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Driving down the mountains was incredible. The views!!  We took a less busy route and stayed off the interstate. I loved seeing all the large ranches.  I've been to many western states, but this was my first time driving through them. It feels so open and wide.  Since it's not as densely populated as the east, we had long 3 hours stretches where it felt like we were literally in the middle of nowhere. I was praying that our van would make it!

I had to get a pic with my baby during one of our many diaper changing stops :)
In Southern Colorado we took a detour to go to the Great Sand Dunes National Park. I admit that I expected to be underwhelmed by this place, but it was incredible and breathtaking. I've been to other sand dunes and this one takes the cake. I needed a camel and a head scarf!

The girls loved running through the water & up and down a few hills. We had to move quickly because a storm came in.

We arrived at my brother's house on Thursday evening and on Friday evening we left for the Grand Canyon. We stayed the night in Flagstaff, Arizona on Friday night and drove to the Canyon on Saturday morning. Another beautiful drive!
Not one photo could have prepared me for how truly spectacular and impressive this place is.  We spent a day there, mostly at the lookout points, and it feels like we barely got a glimpse of it's magnitude. It looks like a painting ...a bit unreal.
The photo tells the truth of our day. The girls were mostly happy and liked seeing the canyon, but we were all so stinkin hot.  We couldn't drink enough water or keep the water cold enough!

Jane was tired of being in the pack!!
We took a break from the heat and ate lunch at the El Tovar Lodge in the park. It was truly a highlight. Great experience and food. Look at my Navajo Taco!
Native American dances - the girls could watch all day

The whole crew - awesome day! We went back to Flagstaff and stayed another night at the hotel.  The girls were happy to swim!

  1. There is NOTHING like that AZ heat. Nick and I experienced it camping about this time last year.

Love the pic of you and sweet Jane.
