New Orleans (Part 2)

The weather could not have been nicer while we were there.  70's and sunny : )
On Monday we toured an old southern plantation, Oak Alley.  This was an old sugar plantation and it had a rich, but sad history.   I love looking at old stuff - there's no better way to put it.  That's why this place was so cool to me.  I know nothing about antiques except that I like them, and when you put a story behind a house and it's people, I'm entertained.  I really enjoyed this attraction : )

We ate lunch at the plantation, and this is where John's Mom decided to order alligator nuggets.  There's something about envisoning a scaley swamp creature that makes a food like that sound unappetizing, but really they did taste mostly like chicken.   We put the nuggets on the girls' plates and didn't tell them they were alligator until they finished their portion.   Of course, then they didn't like them : )

That afternoon we went to see the house where John's family used to live.
Then we drove past this gas station and John said, "Pam, take a picture of that Circle K ... it's where I bought my first comic book."
Slushies at a little hut where John and his sister used to get summer treats : )
Everyone kept asking us if we saw any flooding while we were in New Orleans. Well,  kind of.   There was a spillway close to his childhood home, so we decided to go see it.  Can you see the roof of the barn in the photo above? Lots of water.  The photo below shows how they relieve the water from the Mississippi.  Once again, this was an intriguing adventure for the engineer in the house : )

  1. Your pictures are so fun! Looks like a fabulous time! My friend went to New Orleans and brought me back a beignet mix. By the time I got around to making them, it tasted just like a hard doughnut. I've never really had one. What do they taste like? We did the alligator thing on our honeymoon...I thought it was a lot like chicken but there was also some fishy taste/texture too. Glad you had fun!
