Party Hardy!

This is the last post about Anna's birthday - I promise!  We enjoy celebrating birthdays and in years past we've invited a couple friends over for a small party.  This year Anna had a lot of requests for her party - most of which we couldn't grant.  However, she did ask if she could have all her little buddies over, and we decided to give it a whirl. I can't say that we'll do it again in the next few years, but I'm so glad we did it for her on this special 5th birthday.  Afterwards she said, "I had a great party!!"  The rain did put a wrench in our outdoor games and plans but the Pinata (hung in the basement) saved the day!  It really was a fun and memorable morning.

Lesson learned:
As you can tell in the last two photos we bought a decorated cake for her birthday.  What's up with buying cakes?  This is the 2nd time we've done it and I'm encouraging myself to be happy with making a traditional homemade cake for birthdays!  You see bakery decorated cakes are expensive and we threw half of it away.  Waste.  Not to mention, cake isn't a favorite dessert in this family (unless it's from Coldstone : ), and the girls only lick off the icing.  On Sunday, the day after the party, no one preferred the leftover cake.  Everyone, including myself, wanted my 5-day old simple homemade cupcakes.  I am NOT a good cake decorator, but the old school double layer 9 inch round cake will do, right?   What do you do for birthday cakes?

  2. Your place looks so cute, and you look so pretty! We cut up cake in small pieces and freeze leftover cake. You can enjoy it when you have a hankerin' in the weeks to come and don't have to pig out on all the extra. :)

  3. I like a good homemade cake. My mom still has the bear cake pan she used to make my 1st b-day cake. I'm going to use it for Kate's 1st birthday. I love the family photo!

  5. Adorable Pam! It looks like you had so much fun Anna! We're so thankful for you & the 5 years God has given you! Pammy - I wish I lived closer! I've been decorating some cakes (need to get the pics on the internet) & I LOVE IT! Look around - you may have a friend in your area who does the same & right now, I'm doing them for free (or just cost of supplies) while I get more practice. Just a thought!! FYI - you're creative enough that I bet you'd do a great job yourself. Just get a decorating bag, some tips, make some icing (I've got a great recipe) & try it out - so much fun!
